US seismic intrusion detector (SID) with built-in battery-powered VHF radio transmitters. Upon a trip or disturbance, the SID transmits a VHF signal to hidden radio receivers within their communication range (typically within 1,000 to 1,500 feet) to sound an alarm, analyze the signal, and/or transmit a retransmission, for example). These SIDs were used to detect enemy troop movements in jungle environments. Therefore, they were camouflaged to look like objects naturally occurring in the jungle (e.g., twigs, rocks, etc. covered with moss or mud). However, soldiers often called them "Turd SIDs", "Dog-Doo Transmitters" or "Monkey Turds" because of their shape and color.
